SEGA Genesis Mini 2 Review: Retro Gaming Must-Have

This console is the follow-up to the popular Genesis Mini and comes with 60 classic titles, including some rare and fan-favorite games. In this review, I will share my personal experience with the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 and provide my conclusion on whether it’s worth the investment.

I have to say, I was impressed with the SEGA Genesis Mini 2. The console is more compact than its predecessor, making it easier to store and transport. The package includes the console, a wired control pad, a USB power adapter, a power cable, and an HDMI cable. The controller is comfortable to use, and the buttons are responsive. The emulation is top-notch, and I didn’t experience any slowdown or flaws in any of the games I played.

One of the things I appreciated about the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 is that it comes with some Sega CD titles, which were not available on the previous console. The selection of games is diverse, ranging from classic JRPGs like Phantasy Star II to arcade ports like Virtua Racing. The menu UI is user-friendly, and the ability to toggle between different audio styles adds to the overall charm of the console.

The Design and Package

Modeled after the SEGA Genesis model 2 from 1993, the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 is compact and true to the original design. Inside the package, you will receive the Genesis Mini 2 console, a six-button game pad, an HD.M.I cable, a USB charging cable, a power brick, and a power cable. The package is well organized and compact, making it easy to carry around.

The Game Collection

With a focus on fan favorites, Sega CD, and other unique games, the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 is a carefully curated gaming experience. You get a whopping 60 games included in this mini console, including some of the rarest and most expensive titles, such as Herzog Zwei, Crusaders of Centy, and Truxton. Each game is well-emulated, and there are no obvious flaws or slowdown in the emulation. You can also toggle between the slightly different sound of the Genesis 1 and Genesis 2.

The User Interface

Taking advantage of the six-button controller, the menu UI is impressively smooth on the SEGA Genesis Mini 2. You can sort the titles in several ways, and the “shelf” view shows off the mix of Genesis carts, Sega CDs, and a few Mega CDs. The menu is familiar with an updated Genesis mini one menu feel with lots of Ui and audio settings. You can adjust the audio style of the background music ranging from a more retro Sega genesis audio to a slightly newer 16-bit genesis two audio sound. Overall, the small quality of life features just adds to the overall charm of the console.

SEGA Genesis Mini 2: The Gameplay

SEGA’s emulation on this device is top-notch, ensuring that everything runs exactly as it should. The gameplay is smooth, and the controls are responsive. The SEGA Genesis Mini 2 is a must-own package for retro fans. The console is back and more powerful than ever, with Sega CD titles available as well! The classic titles are well-preserved and will bring back the nostalgia of the ’90s.

SEGA Genesis Mini 2: The Price

While not cheap, the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 is exclusive to Amazon Japan, so import costs must be factored into the price. But, it is a limited run and meant more for collectors. The price may be high, but it is worth it to own this console, especially if you missed the first one. The holes in your library won’t be that bad with this one, and it comes with seven new games, lost unreleased games that M2 finished just for this, and new ports of games that never released on Genesis.

SEGA Genesis Mini 2: The Verdict

For retro gaming enthusiasts, the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 is an amazing console that is well worth the investment. The design is compact, and the package is well-organized. The game collection is curated with more “fan favorites,” Sega CD, and other oddities, making it a must-own package for retro fans. The user interface is slick and well-designed, with small quality of life features that add to the overall charm of the console. The gameplay is smooth and responsive, and the controls are well-emulated. Despite the high price and shipping fees, the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 is an excellent addition to any retro gaming collection.

Pros:

  • More compact than the previous version, making it easier to store and transport.
  • Includes 60 classic titles, including some rare and hard-to-find games.
  • Sega CD titles are available, providing a more complete Sega gaming experience.

Cons:

  • Higher price point than other mini consoles on the market.
  • Only comes with one controller, so multiplayer gaming requires purchasing an additional controller.
  • Some key titles are missing from the collection, leaving room for disappointment.

    Conclusion

Overall, I think the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 is a must-have for retro gaming enthusiasts. While the price may be a bit steep, the console’s quality and selection of games make it worth the investment. The small quality of life features, like the updated UI and audio settings, add to the overall experience of the console. If you missed out on the first Genesis Mini, this is a great opportunity to catch up on some classic titles.
